Ollie Franklin "Bob" Straughn, Jr.

Ollie Franklin "Bob" Straughn, Jr., 82, passed away Tuesday, January 26, 2021 at Sampson Regional Medical Center in Clinton, NC.  Mr. Straughn was born November 9, 1938 in Sampson County, NC to the late Ollie Franklin and Eva Bell Barber Straughn. 

A funeral service will be held 6:00pm, Thursday, January 28, 2021 in Community Funeral Home Chapel, Warsaw, NC.  A private burial will be held in the Straughn Family Cemetery in Warsaw, NC. 

Bob is survived by wife, Lois L. Straughn of the home; sons, Steven Straughn and wife, Dawn of Burgaw, and Bobby Straughn and wife, Jessica of Warsaw; daughters, Melinda Kelly of Texas, Robin Harris and husband, Vincent of Liberty, Lesia McKenzie and husband, Brian of Wendell, and Jessica Straughn Sawyer of Warsaw; brother, Clayton Straughn of Clinton, sisters, Betty Jean Faircloth of Clinton and Eva Lee Brown of New York; many grandchildren and great grandchildren and a four-legged companion, Brandy.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by brother, Stacy Straughn.

Ricky Gill Sloan, 66, passed away January 24, 2021 at Vidant Medical Center in Greenville, NC. Mr. Sloan was born May 18, 1954 to Winnifred Hollowell Sloan and the late Erwin Gill Sloan.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm, Wednesday, January 27, 2021 in Community Funeral Home Chapel, with burial following the service in Devotional Gardens. Visitation will begin at 1:00 pm at the funeral home

Mr. Sloan is survived by his wife, Cathy Sloan of the home; mother, Winnifred Ann Sloan; son, Ricky Paul Sloan and wife, Tricia of Apex; daughter, Ann S. Powers and husband, Keith of Lumberton, NC; four grandchildren, Harrison Sloan, John Merritt, Jordan Powers, and Terry Powers; four brothers, Robert "Bobby" Sloan and wife, Darlene of Buena Vista, VA, Erwin "David" Sloan of Magnolia, Norman Sloan and fiancee, Maryann of Hampstead, and Aaron Sloan and wife, Rosemond of Turkey.

Mr. Sloan was preceded in death by his father, Erwin Gill Sloan and an infant brother, George F. Sloan.

​The family request attendees wear mask and social distance.

Chinquapin - Martha Kay Gore Barnette, 61, passed away Thursday, January 14, 2021 at her home. Mrs. Barnette was born October 7, 1959 in Duplin County, NC to the late Robert Lee and Marie White Gore.

A graveside service will be held 3:00pm, Sunday, January 17, 2021 in Riverview Memorial Park, Watha, NC.

Mrs. Barnette is survived by her husband, Allen Ray Barnette of the home; son, David Foy and wife, Amanda of Pin Hook; daughter, Maria Dail and husband, Jamie of Pin Hook; brother, Bobby Gore and wife, Susan of Rose Hill; and five grandchildren; Hayden Foy, Corbin Foy, Fallon Whaley and husband, Noah, Cody Dail and Taylor Dail.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Barnette was preceded in death by brother, Travis Gore.

Dorothy Barwick Killette, 82, passed away Friday, January 8, 2021 at Vidant Duplin Hospital in Kenansville. Mrs. Killette was born July 18, 1938 in Duplin County, NC to the late Norman and Ruth Lambert Barwick.

A funeral service will be held 12:00 p. m., Monday, January 11, 2021 at Calvary Baptist Church, with burial following the service in Devotional Gardens. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Dorothy is survived by her three children, Elizabeth "Beth" Jones and husband, Marshall of Bel Air, MD, Wiley Hardy Killette, II and wife, Deb of Mooresville, George Glanton Killette of Warsaw; one brother Robert Earl Barwick of Pine Level; seven grandchildren, Mallory Wilson and husband, Joe, Cameron Jones and wife, Megan Ruzicka, Tyler Killette, Rachael Killette, Allison Killette, Kelly Brown, Kristina Hartsfield; and four great grandchildren, Andrew Hartsfield, Caden Hartsfield, Creek Wroe and Ellie Mae Brown.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Killette was preceded in death by her husband of more than 50 years, Wiley Hardy Killette and two brothers, Norman Bryan "NB" Barwick, Jr. and George Durwood Barwick.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, P. O. Box 734, Warsaw, NC 28398.

​Warsaw - Oscar Langston, Jr. 85, passed away January 5, 2021 at Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Wilmington, NC. Mr. Langston was born August 6, 1935 in Duplin County to the late Oscar Langston and Edna Grady Langston.

A graveside service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2021 in Devotional Gardens, Warsaw, NC

Mr. Langston is survived by wife, Carolyn Rhodes Langston; daughters, Ramona Hanchey and husband, Ronnie, Nicole Rose and husband, Gary; step daughter, Tammi Quinn and husband, Tim; step sons, Greg Rhodes and wife, Marisa and Kenneth Rhodes and wife, Debbie; a sister, Leu Ellen Holland; four grandchildren, Kord, Tanner, Eric and Delilah, 13 step grandchildren, 18 step great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and special friend, Mike Dyson.

​In addition to his parents, Mr. Langston was preceded in death by his wife, Rosa Langston.

Wallace - Daisy Bell Foster Whaley, 91, of Wallace passed away January 4, 2021 at the Laurels of Pender.  Mrs. Whaley was born in Duplin County October 19, 1929 to the late Decautar Foster and Gertie Edwards Foster.

A graveside service will be held 11:00am Thursday, January 7, 2021 at Duplin Memorial Gardens in Wallace.


Mrs. Whaley is survived by son, Joseph Whaley of Faison; daughters, Betsy Bloom of 
Sneads Ferry, and Brenda K. Whaley of Wallace; sister, Eula Mae Mobley of Beulaville; fourteen grandchildren; forty-one great grandchildren and numerous great-great grandchildren.

​In addition to her parents, Mrs. Whaley was preceded in death by husband, 
Ardell Whaley; sons, Jedger Whaley, Joseph Thomas Whaley and several brothers and sisters.

Rose Hill - Nell Ray “Barbara” White Hollingsworth, 71, of Rose Hill left this life for her heavenly home Tuesday morning, January 5, 2021 at her home.  Barbara as she was called was born in Duplin County to the late Ellison and Akery Futrell White.

​A graveside service will be held 3:00PM Wednesday, January 6, 2021 at Rose Hill Cemetery, Fire Tower Rd. Rose Hill.

Left to cherish her memories are her husband, Gerald “Shorty” Hollingsworth of the home; son, Gary Wade Hollingsworth (Jessica Newmons); granddaughter, Sarah Mainor; great granddaughter Isabella Tadeo; brother, David E. White (Beverly); sisters, Carolyn W. Smith (Steve James), Doris Ann Kornegay (John), and Linda Foss (Jim).

​In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by sisters, Pauline Quinn, Dorthy Garner and Louise Stroud; brothers, Otis White, Sr., Jimmy White and J. T. White and daughter in law Debbie Hollingsworth.

​Warsaw - Vivian Ray Batts, 81, passed away Thursday, December 31, 2020 at Lower Cape Fear Life Care Center in Wilmington, NC. Mr. Batts was born September 26, 1939 in Duplin County, NC to the late Edward Ray Batts and Ethel Fay Raynor Batts.  

A graveside service will be held 11:00am Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Devotional Gardens in Warsaw, NC.

Mr. Batts is survived by his wife, Wanda P. Batts; four children, Cindy Teachey and husband, Bud, Jimmy Batts and wife, Donna, Tana Herring and husband, James, Terri Neri and husband, Alfonso; ten grandchildren, Brennon Teachey and wife, Mallory, Braxton Teachey and wife, Bethany, Deagen Sholar and husband, Johnson, James Batts, II, Sabrina Batts, Emmitt Herring, Gavin Herring, Matthew Carlton, Robbie Carlton, Danielle Diaz and husband, Irwin; and ten great grandchildren, Cohen Teachey, Conley Teachey, Beckett Teachey, Brewer Teachey, Harbor Sholar, Hollan Sholar, Huxley Sholar, Hytan Sholar, Xavier Carlton, Lucas Diaz.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Batts  was preceded in death by his brother, Danny Batts.
